His journey into fashion began remarkably early. Even at the age of 16, Alexander possessed the determination to know exactly what he wanted to do and how he intended to achieve it. For him, the only way to break the rules was to master them first. With this conviction, he made the difficult decision to leave school and began an apprenticeship on Savile Row, the historic heart of British menswear tailoring. First at Anderson & Sheppard and later at Gieves & Hawkes, he absorbed the finest traditions of tailoring while developing the exceptional pattern cutting and construction skills that would later define his work. After his years on Savile Row, McQueen worked as a pattern cutter for the theatrical costumier Angels & Bermans, where he became familiar with the dramatic language of stage performance. The experience offered early clues to the theatrical presentations that would later captivate the fashion world. At the age of 20, he joined the London based avant garde Japanese designer Koji Tatsuno before moving to Milan to work with Romeo Gigli, whose romantic and refined approach to fashion left a lasting impression on him. These experiences allowed Alexander to combine the precision of British tailoring with the elegance of Italian design at a remarkably young age.

    <div class="row class="alt-font" style="text-align: justify;">Master Tailor Breaks the Rules
Alexander later returned to London to pursue a Master’s degree in Fashion Design at Central Saint Martins, one of the world’s most prestigious fashion schools. Making the most of his time there, he learned not only how to master tailoring, but how to become a fashion designer. His graduate collection, *Jack the Ripper Stalks His Victims*, attracted the attention of influential stylist Isabella Blow, who purchased the entire collection for £5,000 and helped introduce the young designer to the fashion industry. It was also Blow who encouraged him to use his middle name, Alexander, rather than Lee. The success of the collection inspired him to establish his own label, Alexander McQueen, in 1992. Just one year later, Alexander unveiled his first collection, *Taxi Driver*. Named after Martin Scorsese’s cult classic film, the collection also paid tribute to his father. Yet its most significant contribution to fashion history was the introduction of the now iconic bumster trousers. With their dramatically low waistline, they challenged conventional silhouettes and helped define the low rise trend that dominated the 1990s and 2000s. More importantly, they became the first clear manifesto of Alexander McQueen’s determination to question conventions and push creative boundaries. Alongside the growth of his own label, Alexander was appointed Creative Director of Givenchy in 1996. His debut collection for the French house was the Spring/Summer 1997 couture presentation, *Search for the Golden Fleece*, inspired by Greek mythology. Although the collection was heavily criticised for departing from Givenchy’s established elegance, Alexander later acknowledged many of those criticisms himself. The experience nevertheless proved invaluable, teaching him how to soften his naturally rebellious and uncompromising aesthetic with greater refinement. His desire for complete creative freedom ultimately prevailed, and in 2001 he left Givenchy to focus exclusively on his own brand.

Global Expansion
That same year, Alexander sold a 51 percent stake in his rapidly growing company to what was then known as Gucci Group, now part of Kering Group. The move marked the beginning of a new phase of global expansion, with the brand opening stores in London, New York, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, and Milan. As the company strengthened its presence worldwide, it also expanded into fragrances, menswear, eyewear, sneakers, cosmetics, and accessories. Following the launch of the iconic Kingdom fragrance in 2003, MyQueen joined the portfolio in 2005. During this period, Alexander collaborated with Puma on a series of special sneaker collections and introduced McQ in 2006, a diffusion line created for a younger audience. In 2007, he also entered the beauty segment with a limited edition makeup collection for MAC inspired by Elizabeth Taylor’s portrayal of Cleopatra.

Alexander’s Creative Universe
Tradition and rebellion, past and future, beauty and discomfort often coexisted within Alexander’s collections. Drawing inspiration from sources ranging from the Victorian era and Gothic narratives to his Scottish heritage and British history, he did not merely reference the past but continuously reinterpreted and challenged it. His influences extended far beyond Britain and Europe, embracing the cultural heritage of Africa, China, India, Türkiye, and especially Japan, all of which became recurring references throughout his work. The tension between nature and technology also played a significant role in Alexander’s creative universe. Feathers, flowers, seashells, and organic forms appeared alongside industrial materials and technological elements throughout his collections. Yet what truly set Alexander apart was his ability to transform the runway into a work of art. His shows moved far beyond conventional fashion presentations, bringing together theatre, performance art, and cinematography in immersive experiences. He was a fashion artist determined to surprise, provoke, challenge, and sometimes even unsettle his audience.

Iconic Runway Shows
Following the success of his bumster trousers, Alexander presented Highland Rape for Autumn/Winter 1995, one of the first collections to merge historical narratives with fashion while drawing on his Scottish heritage. A year later, Dante, staged inside a church and built around themes of war and peace, accelerated his rise on the international fashion scene. His Spring/Summer 1999 show, No.13, entered fashion history when model Shalom Harlow’s white dress was spray painted by industrial robots during the finale. The Spring/Summer 2001 collection VOSS left a lasting impression with its glass box set resembling a padded psychiatric cell. Alexander continued to challenge convention with Scanners for Autumn/Winter 2003, where models walked through wind tunnels, and The Widows of Culloden for Autumn/Winter 2006, which concluded with a holographic image of Kate Moss inside a glass pyramid. For Plato’s Atlantis in Spring/Summer 2010, the visionary designer explored the relationship between nature and technology while making fashion history once again by live streaming the show online. The broadcast became a global event after Lady Gaga shared it with her followers, and the finale featured the debut of her now iconic single Bad Romance.

Continuing a Legacy
Throughout a career that inspired generations of fashion enthusiasts, Alexander received numerous prestigious awards and accolades. Between 1996 and 2001, he was named British Designer of the Year four times by the British Fashion Council. In 2003, he was awarded a CBE for his services to the fashion industry and was also honoured with the International Designer of the Year award by the Council of Fashion Designers of America. His designs were worn by some of the world’s most celebrated figures, including Nicole Kidman, Sarah Jessica Parker, Björk, and Lady Gaga. Alexander continued to present his collections and groundbreaking runway shows until February 2010. Nine days after losing his mother to cancer, he took his own life at his London home, leaving the fashion world in mourning. Sarah Burton, a fellow Central Saint Martins graduate and his closest creative collaborator since the early days of the brand, completed the Autumn/Winter 2010 collection that Alexander had been unable to finish and subsequently accepted the role of Creative Director. Preserving the spirit of Alexander McQueen while guiding it into a new era, Burton carried the brand’s legacy forward for thirteen years before announcing her departure in September 2023. She concluded her remarkable tenure with the Spring/Summer 2024 collection, a heartfelt tribute to Alexander. Today, the role of Creative Director is held by another Central Saint Martins graduate, Irish designer Seán McGirr.

MCQUEEN EYEWEAR
McQueen Eyewear carries the rebellious and boundary pushing design philosophy of its founder into the world of eyewear. Since 2014, the design, development, and worldwide distribution of the collections have been managed by Kering Eyewear. While preserving Alexander McQueen’s creative identity, the collections combine British avant garde aesthetics with exceptional craftsmanship. Sharp geometric lines, dramatic cat eye silhouettes, oversized shields, bold aviator interpretations, and distinctive metal detailing define the brand’s visual language. Signature elements such as the iconic skull motif, the T-Bar, and industrial inspired rivets reinforce the unmistakable McQueen identity. The collections also reflect a commitment to innovation, incorporating sustainable materials such as bio acetate alongside high performance lenses that combine full UV protection with premium craftsmanship.
