In 1937, at a time of political and economic uncertainty across Europe, two Basel opticians joined forces to establish a reliable, locally based source of ophthalmic lens production for the Swiss market. What began as a modest enterprise under the name J. & R. Flemming would evolve into Optiswiss, one of Switzerland’s established lens manufacturers. From these local beginnings, the company steadily expanded its production capabilities and technical expertise, while a commitment to engineering precision, reliability and quality became firmly embedded in its identity. As technologies advanced, production methods evolved and the needs of the optical industry changed, these developments continued to shape Optiswiss, while Basel became far more than its birthplace: it remained the enduring center of its manufacturing operations. Today, Optiswiss’ nearly 90-year journey not only tells the story of a Swiss brand, but also traces the evolution of ophthalmic lenses themselves, an indispensable element of the optical industry.

From Basel to the World
Basel has remained the constant at the center of Optiswiss’ growth story. Over the years, the company operated within major optical groups, including American Optical and later Zeiss Vision Care, yet maintained its manufacturing operations in Switzerland through different corporate structures. In 1981, it moved to its present headquarters at Lyon-Strasse 26 and adopted the name Optiswiss Thaler AG, expanding its production capacity while establishing a growing presence in international markets. This direction gained momentum with the expansion of its export division in 1997, while Basel retained its role as the brand’s center for manufacturing and technology. A defining milestone in Optiswiss’ corporate history came in 2015, when the transfer of Carl Zeiss Vision’s majority stake restored the company’s full independence. A new chapter followed in 2019 with the appointment of Samuel Frei as Ceo and Denis-André Zaugg as Chairman of the Board, bringing further modernization of the Basel production infrastructure and renewed momentum to the company’s international growth strategy. Investments in production capacity and advanced technologies were accompanied by initiatives designed to strengthen its presence across global markets. Today, Optiswiss continues to manufacture its lenses in Basel, preserving its 100% Swiss Made identity through high-tech investments and a firm commitment to sustainability.

Strategic technology partnerships have also become an integral part of this new chapter. Collaboration with German measurement technology specialist Oculus paved the way for significant advances in Biometrics in 2021, with the two companies renewing their long-term partnership in 2023. Also in 2021, early stage work with Luxexcel brought VisionPlatform 7 into the Basel production environment for a limited period, reflecting Optiswiss’ spirit of innovation and technological exploration. In 2024, the company formalized a strategic development partnership with Indizen Optical Technologies (IOT), a Madrid-based Spanish R&D specialist in ophthalmic lens technologies, to jointly develop technologies and innovations for selected areas of its product portfolio. Smyle, developed for myopia management, emerged as the first result of this collaboration, which has also paved the way for further developments in progressive lens technology. Today, Optiswiss continues to pursue innovation across a broad spectrum, spanning biometric and AI-supported progressive lenses, myopia management and smart eyewear, as well as sun and photochromic lenses and an expanding palette of colors. The new SwissVario progressive lens series introduced in 2026, together with additions to the brand’s color and sun lens portfolio, including Transitions® GEN S™, further reflects the direction of its current development. Remaining closely connected to Basel throughout its history, Optiswiss has evolved over nearly nine decades from a local lens manufacturer into an independent, technology-driven Swiss brand with products available in more than 20 countries.

The Biometric Future of Vision
Recognizing that every eye has a unique anatomical structure, Optiswiss took personalized lens design to a new level with its Biometrics technology in 2021. Oculus’ high-precision measurement systems determine biometric parameters such as axial length, the eye’s center of rotation and pupil diameter, integrating this data directly into the lens design. This enables a more natural and comfortable visual experience with lenses calculated according to the wearer’s actual eye anatomy rather than standard values. Moving beyond the standard eye models traditionally used in lens design, Optiswiss’ approach makes each wearer’s individual anatomy part of the design process. Combining biometric data with personal wearing parameters allows the lens to be tailored more precisely to the wearer, while enabling more natural transitions between different viewing directions and distances. Bringing together measurement technologies developed with Oculus and Optiswiss’ expertise in lens design has made Biometrics one of the brand’s most significant technological advances in personalized vision. Today, this groundbreaking technology can also be applied to single vision and near vision lenses, while its most advanced expression is SwissVario Biometrics Horizon, the premium progressive lens in the brand’s new SwissVario series introduced this year. Combining biometric optimization with individual visual needs and lifestyle dynamics, the lens represents one of Optiswiss’ most advanced achievements in translating its precision lens manufacturing expertise into personalized vision technology.

Pushing the Boundaries of Lens Technology
What sets Optiswiss apart is not only the precision engineering behind its lenses, but also its contribution to the future of lens technology by developing products that respond to rapidly changing user needs together with specialized technology partners. As part of its work with Luxexcel in 2021, Optiswiss integrated VisionPlatform 7 into production at an early stage of the technology, exploring the potential of 3D-printed prescription lenses and the integration of smart eyewear technologies directly into the lens structure. Although the technology was discontinued at Optiswiss in 2024, it provided valuable experience and insights for future projects while reflecting Optiswiss’ commitment to exploring new frontiers in vision technology This vision entered a new dimension in 2025 through a strong production and development partnership with Finnish technology company IXI. As part of the collaboration, Optiswiss became involved in the production of autofocus lenses developed for IXI’s smart eyewear technology, enabling wearers to automatically focus across different viewing distances. Through this and other forward-looking projects, Optiswiss has become an active contributor to the transition between traditional ophthalmic lens manufacturing and next-generation vision technologies.

Another recent example of Optiswiss’ response to evolving eye health needs is Smyle, introduced in 2024 as the first outcome of its work with IOT and the highly regarded research institute BHVI. Developed particularly for children in response to the rapidly growing global challenge of myopia, Smyle is designed to support its management. Combining a central full-correction zone with asymmetric peripheral defocus and accommodative support, Smyle aims to slow myopia progression, yet Optiswiss approaches the issue from a perspective that extends beyond product development alone. The brand positions Smyle not simply as a lens, but as a comprehensive solution encompassing measurement, assessment, product and support. Reinforced by educational and informational materials, this approach reflects how Optiswiss combines its technical expertise in lens manufacturing with a long-term commitment to eye health. From 3D printing and smart eyewear to myopia management, these developments demonstrate a vision focused not only on meeting today’s demands, but also on preparing for the vision needs of the future.
